The future (Futur I): werden + infinitive at the end
Explanation
To talk about the future, German uses the verb „werden“ + an infinitive. „werden“ is conjugated (ich werde, du wirst, er/sie wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden) and stands — like every second verb — in position 2. The infinitive goes to the END of the sentence, exactly as with the modal verbs from chapter 21. So: „Ich werde Deutsch lernen“, „Morgen werde ich reisen“, „Wir werden bald beginnen“. After a time expression there is inversion (chapter 30): „Nächstes Jahr werde ich nach Berlin reisen“. Tip: in everyday life, for the near future people often simply use the present with a time expression: „Morgen lerne ich Deutsch“ — that is also correct. Typical mistake: in English the verb comes right after „will“ („I will learn German“), so English speakers put the infinitive right behind „werde“: „Ich werde lernen Deutsch“ ✗. In German „werden … infinitive“ forms a bracket, and the infinitive comes at the end: „Ich werde Deutsch lernen“ ✓.
Examples
- Morgen werde ich Deutsch lernen.Tomorrow I will study German.
- Nächstes Jahr werden wir nach Deutschland reisen.Next year we will travel to Germany.
- Sie wird bald kommen und wir werden beginnen. She will come soon and we will begin.
- Eines Tages werde ich diese Reise machen. One day I will make that trip.
