Emotions with „sein“, wellbeing with „mir ist…“
Explanation
For EMOTIONS and moods German uses „sein + adjective“, as you already know: „Ich bin müde“, „Ich bin froh“, „Sie ist traurig“, „Er ist nervös“, „Ich bin krank“. But for TEMPERATURE and physical wellbeing, a different pattern is used: the dative with „ist“. Not „ich“ but „mir“: „Mir ist kalt“, „Mir ist warm“, „Mir ist schlecht“ (I feel sick). Likewise „Dir ist kalt?“, „Ihm ist warm“. This dative is the same as with „weh tun“ from chapter 29 (der Kopf tut mir weh). And for hunger, thirst or fear you use „haben“ + noun (chapter 20): „Ich habe Hunger“, „Ich habe Durst“, „Ich habe Angst“. Typical mistake: in English everything is said with „to be“ („I am cold“), so English speakers translate literally: „Ich bin kalt“ ✗ — but that means „I am a cold, unfeeling person“! For temperature you say „Mir ist kalt“ ✓. Rule: a feeling of the soul → „ich bin“; a temperature of the body → „mir ist“.
Examples
- Ich bin müde, aber ich bin froh.I am tired, but I am happy.
- Mach bitte das Fenster zu, mir ist kalt. Please close the window, I’m cold.
- Die Kinder sind müde und haben ein bisschen Angst. The children are tired and a little afraid.
- Es ist heiß, mir ist warm und ich habe Durst. It’s hot, I’m warm and I’m thirsty.
