"좋아하다" with "을/를": 축구를 좋아해요

Explanation

In ch7 we learned "좋다" (adjective, 이/가) and "좋아하다" (verb). Now we complete "좋아하다": what you like takes the object marker "을/를" (like "을/를 주세요" in ch19). Use "을" after a final consonant, "를" after none: 축구를 좋아해요, 음악을 좋아해요, 영화를 좋아해요, 운동을 좋아해요. "좋다" is an adjective and takes "이/가" (한국이 좋아요), but "좋아하다" is a verb and takes "을/를". Copying English "I like soccer" as "축구가 좋아해요" is wrong — the object of "좋아하다" takes "을/를": "축구를 좋아해요". To ask what someone likes, say "뭘 좋아해요?" (= 뭐를 좋아해요?).

한국 사람들의 여가 생활How Koreans spend their free time

Koreans love to spend their free time together. On weekends they go to a 노래방 (singing room) with friends, hike with family, and rest at a 찜질방 (sauna). How people relax tells you a lot about a culture.

The singing room (노래방)

A hugely popular pastime in Korea is the "노래방". You rent a room and sing songs with friends. After a work dinner, on a birthday, or the day an exam ends — people go to a 노래방 to let off steam. It is fine if you cannot sing well. What matters is enjoying it together.

Hiking and nature

Korea is a mountainous country, so hiking is a hobby for people of all ages. On weekend mornings, people in hiking gear head for the mountains. At the summit they eat 김밥 (rice rolls) and enjoy the fresh air. Hiking is both exercise and time to chat with friends.

Saunas and PC rooms

When they want to rest, Koreans go to a "찜질방". In warm rooms they sweat, drink 식혜 (sweet rice punch), and even sleep. Young people play games together at a "PC방" (internet café). In this way, most Korean leisure has one thing in common: it is done "together".

In short: Korean leisure is about being together, not alone. Sing at a 노래방, climb a mountain, rest at a 찜질방. When someone asks you "뭐 좋아해요?" (what do you like?), it is often also an invitation to hang out together.
