Korean · TOPIK Band 1 · Chapter 26

어떻게 생겼어요?What do they look like?

Eotteoke saenggyeosseoyo?

Describing people. Words: 키 (height), 눈 (eyes), 머리 (hair), 크다 (to be big/tall), 작다 (to be small/short), 길다 (to be long), 짧다 (to be short), 친절하다 (to be kind), 잘생기다 (to be good-looking), 예쁘다 (to be pretty). Key grammar: appearance and features are said with "[noun]이/가 + adjective" — 키가 커요 (is tall), 눈이 커요 (has big eyes), 머리가 길어요 (has long hair). Korean does NOT use "have" like English. English speakers say "저는 큰 눈이 있어요" with "있다" ✗ → "눈이 커요" ✓ (a feature is an adjective, not "있다"). To compare, "[noun]보다 + adjective": 지은 씨가 마이클 씨보다 커요 (Jieun is taller than Michael). Pronunciation corner: the "ㅡ" drop when conjugating adjectives (크다 → 커요, 예쁘다 → 예뻐요).

Appearance and features: "[noun]이/가 + adjective"

Explanation

To describe a person's appearance or features, Korean does NOT use "have (가지다)" like English. Instead it says "[feature]이/가 + adjective": 키가 커요 (is tall), 눈이 커요 (has big eyes), 머리가 길어요 (has long hair), 머리가 짧아요 (has short hair). Using "있다" as in "저는 큰 눈이 있어요" sounds unnatural — a feature is expressed with an adjective: "눈이 커요". Adjectives end in "-아/어요" just like in ch20: 크다→커요, 작다→작아요, 길다→길어요, 예쁘다→예뻐요, 친절하다→친절해요. Personality is the same: "그 사람은 친절해요" (that person is kind). To compare two people, use "[noun]보다 + adjective": "지은 씨가 마이클 씨보다 커요" (Jieun is taller than Michael). "보다" means "compared to / than".

Examples

  • 키가 커요.(He/she) is tall.
  • 머리가 길어요.(She) has long hair.
  • 그 사람은 친절해요.That person is kind.
  • 지은 씨가 마이클 씨보다 커요.Jieun is taller than Michael.
