어디가 아파요?Where does it hurt?

Eodiga apayo?

The body and health. Words: 몸 (body), 머리 (head), 배 (stomach), 목 (throat), 손 (hand), 발 (foot), 아프다 (to hurt/be sick), 열 (fever), 기침 (cough), 병원 (hospital). Key grammar: to say where it hurts, use "[body part]이/가 아파요" — 머리가 아파요 (my head hurts), 배가 아파요 (my stomach hurts). "아프다" is an adjective, so it takes "이/가" and NOT the object marker "을/를" (do not confuse it with the "을/를" from ch19). English speakers say "머리를 아파요" copying "My head hurts" ✗ → "머리가 아파요" ✓. Symptoms are said with "열이 있어요" (have a fever), "기침을 해요" (have a cough), and if you are sick, "병원에 가요" (go to the hospital). Pronunciation corner: batchim sounds (몸, 목, 손, 발).

Where it hurts: "[body part]이/가 아파요"

Explanation

To say where it hurts, use "[body part]이/가 아파요": 머리가 아파요 (my head hurts), 배가 아파요 (my stomach hurts), 목이 아파요 (my throat hurts). "아프다" is an adjective, so it takes "이/가" — not the object marker "을/를". We learned "을/를" in ch19, but it is not used with "아프다". Copying English "My head hurts" as "머리를 아파요" is wrong — "머리가 아파요" is correct. If several places hurt, say each with "-이/가 아파요": "머리가 아파요. 그리고 배가 아파요." Other symptoms are said with "열이 있어요" (have a fever) and "기침을 해요" (have a cough — here "을/를" marks the object of "기침을 하다"), and if you are sick, "병원에 가요".

Examples

  • 머리가 아파요.My head hurts.
  • 배가 아파요. 그리고 목이 아파요.My stomach hurts. And my throat hurts.
  • 열이 있어요. 기침을 해요.I have a fever. I have a cough.
  • 많이 아파요. 병원에 가요.It hurts a lot. I am going to the hospital.
