많이 먹어요?Do you eat a lot?

Mani meogeoyo?

Talking about food and quantity. Vocabulary: 밥, 국, 반찬, 생선, 채소, 고기, 물, 많이, 조금, 너무, 배부르다. Key grammar: "많이" (a lot), "조금" (a little), "너무" (too) are adverbs of quantity. Korean adverbs modify the verb, not the noun, and come right before the verb: "물을 많이 마셔요" (물을 + 많이 + 마셔요, I drink a lot of water), "밥을 조금 먹어요" (I eat a little rice), "너무 많이 먹었어요" (I ate too much). English speakers, like "a lot of water", put "많이" before the noun: "많이 물을 마셔요" ✗ → "물을 많이 마셔요" ✓. Hangul corner: "많이" — the ㅎ of the batchim ㄶ drops, so it sounds [마니]; "맛있어요" sounds [마시써요].

Adverbs of quantity: 많이, 조금, 너무

Explanation

"많이" (a large amount), "조금" (a small amount), "너무" (excessively) are adverbs. English "a lot of / a little" comes before the noun, but in Korean the adverb modifies the verb and comes right before the verb. So you say the object (을/를) first, then the adverb, and the verb last: "물을 많이 마셔요" (물을 → 많이 → 마셔요), "밥을 조금 먹어요", "고기를 너무 많이 먹었어요" (I ate too much meat). "너무" can also modify other adverbs or adjectives: "너무 매워요" (too spicy), "너무 배불러요" (too full). English speakers, like "a lot of water", put "많이" before the noun: "많이 물을 마셔요" ✗ → "물을 많이 마셔요" ✓. Always place an adverb of quantity before the verb.

Examples

  • 저는 물을 많이 마셔요.I drink a lot of water.
  • 고기를 조금 먹어요.I eat a little meat.
  • 어제 너무 많이 먹었어요.Yesterday I ate too much.
  • 채소를 많이 먹어요. 그래서 건강해요.I eat a lot of vegetables. So I am healthy.
