Korean · TOPIK Band 1 · Chapter 43
제주도에 간 적이 있어요?Have you ever been to Jeju?
Travel and holidays. Vocabulary: 여행, 여행하다, 휴가, 호텔, 표, 공항, 가방, 여권, 구경하다, 기차. Key grammar: the experience ending "-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 / 없다". It means "to have (never) done ~ before". It broadens the past you learned in chapter 34 ("-았/었어요") to ask about "experience up to now". It attaches to the verb stem: no 받침 → "-ㄴ 적이 있다" (가다 → 간 적이 있다), with 받침 → "-은 적이 있다" (먹다 → 먹은 적이 있다). "있다" = you have the experience, "없다" = you have never done it. Distinguish two things: "제주도에 갔어요" is "(then) I went", a single event, while "제주도에 간 적이 있어요" is "I have been", an experience. Common English-speaker mistake: you must distinguish English "Have you ever gone?" (experience) from "Did you go?" (event) in Korean too, but people easily use just the plain past "갔어요?" for the experience question. For experience, say "간 적이 있어요?" ✓. Hangul corner: "적이" links to [저기] ("간 적이" → [간 저기]), and "있어요" is [이써요].

Experience: "-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 / 없다"
Explanation
"-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다" means "to have done ~ before" (to have the experience), and "-(으)ㄴ 적이 없다" means "to have never done ~". The past "-았/었어요" from chapter 34 is an event ("I did that then"); this expression says "I do/don't have such an experience up to now". It attaches to the verb stem: no 받침 → "-ㄴ 적이 있다" (가다 → 간 적이 있다, 하다 → 한 적이 있다), with 받침 → "-은 적이 있다" (먹다 → 먹은 적이 있다, 읽다 → 읽은 적이 있다). (A ㄹ stem changes ㄹ to ㄴ: 만들다 → 만든 적이 있다.) Examples: "제주도에 간 적이 있어요" (I have been to Jeju), "한국 음식을 먹은 적이 없어요" (I have never eaten Korean food). Question: "~한 적이 있어요?" (= have you ever ~?). Be sure to distinguish two things. "어제 제주도에 갔어요" is one event — I actually went yesterday. "제주도에 간 적이 있어요?" is an experience question — "have you ever been, even once in your life?". Common English-speaker mistake: even in English, "Did you go?" (event) and "Have you ever gone?" (experience) differ. If you use just "갔어요?" for the experience question, it can sound like "did you go (at a specific time)?". To ask about experience, say "간 적이 있어요?" ✓. Summary: an event is "-았/었어요", an experience is "-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다".
