Explanation

In France, people use SMS (« un texto ») and WhatsApp a lot, especially for family and friends abroad. But one very French habit remains: politeness, even in writing. Many people start a message with « Bonjour » and end it with « Merci » or « Bonne journée » (Have a good day), even for a quick question. A too-direct message, with no « bonjour », can seem curt. You can reply with a voice note or in writing, as you prefer; what matters is the little word of politeness at the start. « Bonjour, est-ce que tu peux m'envoyer l'adresse ? Merci ! » (Hello, can you send me the address? Thanks!) always sounds good.

In France, « sans contact » (contactless) payment is everywhere: you hold the card or the phone near the terminal, and it's paid, with no PIN for small amounts. Many people pay with their smartphone (« le paiement mobile », mobile payment) or use an app between friends, like Lydia, to pay each other back for a coffee or split the bill. You often hear « Tu peux me faire un Lydia ? » (Can you send me a Lydia?) or « C'est sans contact ? » (Is it contactless?). From the market to the café, paying this way is common. You don't need to master it all right away; recognising the words is enough not to be lost at the till.

Technology vocabulary changes by country. In Quebec, people insist on translating English words: they say « courriel » for e-mail, « clavardage » for chat, « pourriel » for spam. In France, the English word is often kept (« un mail », « chatter »). In French-speaking West Africa — in Senegal, in Côte d'Ivoire — the phone is king, and mobile money (« mobile money », like Orange Money or Wave) is used to send money, pay a bill or top up a plan, often without a bank account. The same French, then, but very different digital habits. Recognising these words helps you understand a French speaker wherever they are.
