Explanation

俄罗斯城市充满流动：数百万人乘地铁、公交和 «маршрутка»（合乘小巴）去上班。要在城市生活，你需要会两件事：使用交通工具，以及礼貌地与陌生人搭话。我们来看看俄罗斯人如何在城里出行，以及如何与不认识的人开口交谈。
地铁——地下的宫殿
The Moscow metro is one of the most beautiful in the world: marble, mosaics, chandeliers and statues, like a real palace. It is very deep, so the escalators are long — and there is an important rule: stand on the RIGHT, while those in a hurry walk on the left. Trains come every one or two minutes, and you enter with a «Тройка» card. There is a metro in other big cities too — in Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk. Besides the metro, the city has buses, trolleybuses, trams and «marshrutki» — small minibuses that stop almost anywhere. For a newcomer the metro is the easiest way: look at the map, find your station and go.
«Извините» 与 «年轻人！»
How do you call out to a stranger? Russian has no handy word like the English «excuse me, sir». People usually begin with «Извините» or «Простите» — this opens the conversation politely. To address someone, people often go by age and gender: «Молодой человек!» (young man) or «Девушка!» (young woman) — that is how they call shop assistants and waiters too, even if they are over thirty. Elders are addressed with respect, and in a formal setting by name and patronymic (Мария Ивановна), as you remember from the early chapters. An important rule: to an adult stranger you say «вы», not «ты» (chapter 3). «Извините, вы не подскажете, где метро?» (Excuse me, could you tell me where the metro is?) is the perfect opener.
排队、门与给老奶奶让座
The city has its own unwritten rules. Russians take the queue seriously: join the end and ask «Кто последний?» (Who is last?). On the metro and bus it is the custom to give up your seat to the elderly, pregnant women and parents with children — if you are sitting and a «babushka» (granny) is standing nearby, it is better to stand. Doors are held for the person coming behind. On the escalator you stand on the right. People may seem stern and silent on the street, but ask for directions and they will gladly help, sometimes even walk you to the place. A little politeness — «извините», «спасибо», «пожалуйста» — and the city becomes kinder to you.
地铁、礼貌的 «извините» 和对排队的尊重——通往俄罗斯城市的三把钥匙。交通能带你去任何地方，而一句小小的善意话语能打开任何门。城市也许看起来庞大而严肃，但里面满是愿意帮助礼貌发问者的人。
