Accusative pronouns: mich, dich, ihn, sie
Explanation
To avoid repeating the name („Ich rufe Paul an → ich rufe ihn an“), German uses short object pronouns in the accusative: ich → mich, du → dich, er → ihn, sie → sie, es → es, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie/Sie → sie/Sie. In chapter 7 you already saw the accusative with „haben“ (ich habe einen Bruder). These pronouns usually stand right after the conjugated verb: „Ich rufe dich an“, „Sie ruft mich an“, „Ich sehe ihn morgen“, „Kennst du sie?“. With a separable verb like „anrufen“ (chapter 18), the pronoun goes BEFORE the separated part: „Ich rufe dich an“ (not „Ich rufe an dich“). It sits inside the bracket: rufe … an, with the object in the middle. Typical mistake: in English „you“ never changes, so English speakers use the base form „du“: „Ich rufe du an“ ✗. But the object is in the accusative: „du“ → „dich“: „Ich rufe dich an“ ✓.
