이 동물이 더 커요This animal is bigger

Nature and animals. Vocabulary: 동물, 개, 고양이, 새, 나무, 꽃, 강, 산, 바다, 숲. Key grammar: the comparative particle "보다". When comparing two things, you attach the particle "보다" to the thing you compare against (the standard), and then add "더" (= more) or "덜" (= less). Word order matters: [subject] + [standard]보다 + 더 + [adjective]. Example: "이 산이 저 산보다 더 높아요" (이 산 = subject, 저 산보다 = standard, 더 높아요 = higher). Use "제일" or "가장" for the superlative: "이 산이 제일 높아요" (the highest). Common English-speaker mistake: English says "A is bigger THAN B", with "than B" after the adjective; but Korean puts "B보다" before "더 + adjective". So you do not say "이 개가 더 커요 저 개보다" ✗, you say "이 개가 저 개보다 더 커요" ✓. And "보다" attaches to the noun (저 개보다). Hangul corner: "보다" [보다] and the adjectives "커요 / 작아요".

Comparison: "N보다 (더) + adjective"

Explanation

To compare two things, you use the particle "보다". "보다" attaches to the noun that is the standard, giving "N보다" (= than N). Then you put "더" (more) before the adjective, giving "더 ~하다". Basic word order: [subject]이/가 + [standard]보다 + 더 + [adjective]. Example: "코끼리가 개보다 더 커요" (코끼리가 = subject, 개보다 = standard, 더 커요 = bigger) — "An elephant is bigger than a dog." "덜" gives the opposite meaning: "고양이가 개보다 덜 커요" (= less big = smaller). "더" can be dropped: "코끼리가 개보다 커요" is also fine. The superlative (the most ~) is made with "제일" or "가장": "코끼리가 제일 커요" (= the biggest). Here "보다" is not needed. Common English-speaker mistake: English says "A is bigger THAN B", with "than B" after the adjective; but Korean has the reverse order. "B보다" comes first, then "더 + adjective". So you do not say "이 개가 더 커요 저 개보다" ✗, you say "이 개가 저 개보다 더 커요" ✓. Also, "보다" is written attached to the noun, with no space: "저 개보다" (○). Summary: [standard]보다 + 더 + [adjective] = "more ~ than".
