La maison et les pièces
英语「there is a table」用动词「be」,所以说英语的人对新事物说「Une table est dans le salon」✗;法语需要「Il y a une table dans le salon」✓。

Grammar
Explanation
「Il y a un lit dans la chambre」、「Il y a deux fenêtres」、「Il y a des livres ici」。(你在第28课天气里见过「il y a」:「il y a du vent」;这里用于房间里的物品。) 经典错误:英语「there is a table」也用动词「be」,所以说英语的人对新事物说「Une table est dans le salon」✗。法语里新的、不定的事物要用「il y a」:「Il y a une table dans le salon」✓。
Examples
- Il y a un lit dans la chambre.
- Le livre est sur la table.
- Il y a un canapé dans le salon.
- Le chat est sous le lit.
Culture
La maison française
In big cities, many people live in a flat, often in an old « Haussmann » building with high ceilings, or in a more modern one. In the countryside and the suburbs, you find the detached house (the « pavillon »), with a small garden. Homes are sometimes small, so every room counts: the kitchen may be tiny, but the table stays the centre of life. Many buildings have a keypad at the entrance and, in the past, a « concierge » or a caretaker. Whatever the size, the living room (or « séjour ») and the kitchen table are the heart of the home.
When you have guests, it all begins in the entrance hall: you take the guest's coat, then move to the living room for « l'apéro » (the apéritif) — a drink and a few olives or crisps before sitting down to eat. The meal is an important moment: you eat seated, without rushing, often in several courses (starter, main, cheese, dessert), and the conversation matters as much as the food. You say « bon appétit » before starting. Bringing something (flowers, a dessert, a bottle) is much appreciated, and it is better to arrive about fifteen minutes late: that is « le quart d'heure de politesse » (the courtesy quarter-hour).
At home, many French people put on « chaussons » (slippers). Taking off your shoes at the door is not an absolute rule as in Asia, but it is done more and more, especially in newer flats; the best is to ask the host. In the evening, people close the « volets » (shutters) at the windows — for darkness, quiet and a bit of privacy. The home is a fairly private space: you do not walk in without being invited, and « chez-soi » (one's own home) is earned. But once invited, you are truly welcome: accept the apéro, compliment the meal, and take your time — leaving too quickly can seem rushed.
